According to The Metro, Chelsea veteran Olivier Giroud has opened up on his future at the club.
The 34-year-old is willing to stay and fight for his place at the club. He has however accepted that the situation will be reassessed in January.
Having signed German ace Timo Werner, Chelsea are well stocked in the striking department. With Tammy Abraham also showing an upsurge in form, competition for places is at a high.
“I’ve written a book called ‘Always Believe It’ so I’m not going to go anywhere without a fight.”
Despite his age, Giroud is a competent striker capable of stepping up when needed. He showcased just that last season when he stepped in for the injured Abraham.
He led from the front as Chelsea went on to finish in the top four and also make the FA Cup final.
The Frenchman has however made only two appearances for the club this season, both of which came in the league cup. With us not anymore in the competition, the chances of him playing regularly are debatable.
“I am convinced that I have a role to play at Chelsea. We will see in January.”
The Frenchman’s mental strength was praised by France national team manager Didier Deschamps.
“He is never as strong as when he finds himself in a difficult situation and performing at a high level is about being strong in the head. He is always there.”
The comments augur well for Giroud going into next summer’s European Championship. Given his age, it might be his last major international tournament.
Giroud is a part of the French squad set to face Ukraine, Portugal and Croatia. He is currently on 99 caps for France and could make the landmark century soon enough.
