Signing Edouard Mendy could prove to be one of Chelsea’s most significant piece of business this summer.
The Senegalese star may not be the biggest name in football, but bringing him in was important given the difficulties faced by Kepa Arrizabalaga.
The 28-year-old made his Chelsea debut in the Carabao Cup fourth-round clash against Tottenham Hotspur. Although it ended in defeat, the player was praised for his performance by Frank Lampard.
Mendy took to Instagram to express his views on the match. While he is sad about the result, he is honoured to put on the jersey and is willing to move on.
While Mendy did struggle to claim the ball and also save a penalty in the shootout, he showed good awareness and ability for the majority of the game.
Given that it was his first match, he did reasonably well and can only improve.
Chelsea have endured a difficult start to the season. They have already dropped five points in the Premier League while also being knocked out of the Carabao Cup.
A major reason for this has been our inability to keep a clean sheet. Chelsea have conceded six times in just three league games so far. This has to be addressed if we are serious about challenging at the top.
Maintaining a clean sheet against Crystal Palace this weekend will be a good start.
Ben Chilwell also made his first start for Chelsea against Tottenham. With key players returning from injury, Lampard will finally have the tools required to close the gap at the top.
