Chelsea attempted to sign Marc-Andre Ter Stegen before landing Edouard Mendy

According to Spanish publication Mundo Deportivo via Sport Witness (h/t The Mirror), Chelsea attempted to bring in Marc-Andre Ter Stegen before they signed Edouard Mendy.

The Blues have struggled to have a dependable number one since Thibaut Courtois left for Real Madrid in 2018. Kepa Arrizabalaga has failed to make an impact and was dropped numerous times in favour of Willy Caballero last season.

While he returned to the starting XI this season, the performance against Liverpool saw him get relegated to the bench once again.

Chelsea made an attempt to sign Marc Andre Ter-Stegen

Given our troubles at the back, bringing in a new No.1 was a given in the summer window.

According to the report, Chelsea made an effort to land Ter Stegen. The Barcelona star is amongst the best keepers in world football.

The Blues made an attempt to prise the German ace away from the Nou Camp. The player, however, was not keen on a move was stayed put at the Catalan giants.

Kepa has failed to impress at Chelsea

Ter Stegen’s current deal at Barcelona expires in 2022. He is expected to sign a new long-term contract, keeping him in Catalunya until 2025.

Eventually, Chelsea signed Rennes goalkeeper Edouard Mendy. While the Senegalese is not the biggest name out there, he appears to be an effective one.

Despite a disappointing outing against Tottenham Hotspur, Mendy impressed in the 4-0 thrashing of Crystal Palace. It was our first clean sheet in the Premier League this season.

Hopefully, Mendy will play more of a proactive role in goal than Kepa. A strong defence could very well give us the base to go on and enjoy a successful season.
