According to the Mirror, Chelsea skipper Cesar Azpilicueta has challenged Kai Havertz after the latter’s heroics against Barnsley.
Chelsea broke their club record to land the German ace earlier this summer. He got off to an underwhelming start against Brighton and Liverpool.
However, he came into his own yesterday night in the Carabao Cup third round fixture at the Bridge. Although he lasted just 65 minutes, Havertz scored a hat-trick and reminded everyone why he is one of the hottest talents in European football.
The performance saw club captain Azpilicueta send the youngster a message on social media.
His response came to a Tweet made by Havertz where he expressed his happiness at breaking the duck for Chelsea. Azpilicueta replied that this is just the start of things to come.
Coming in as the club’s record signing can be too much pressure for some players. One only needs to look to Kepa Arizabalaga to see that.
With the monkey off his back, Havertz can now focus on replicating the performances on the pitch. His display also caught the attention of Chelsea boss Frank Lampard.
The Blues boss praised the player for his performance and the link-up he displayed with Tammy Abraham.
Ross Barkley and Olivier Giroud also got off the mark this season as the Blues ran out 6-0 winners.
Thiago Silva and Ben Chilwell also made their Chelsea bows in the game. The latter came on as a sub and set up Giroud for our sixth of the night.
The team is slowly but surely getting better.
