Chelsea starlet Ethan Ampadu joins Sheffield United on loan

As confirmed by the club’s official site, Chelsea youngster Ethan Ampadu has joined Sheffield United on a season-long loan.

The 19-year-old came through the youth ranks at Exeter City before joining Chelsea in the summer of 2017. He made his first-team debut for the club in December that year but has only made 11 more since. (h/t Chelsea FC)

Last summer saw Ampadu leave Chelsea on loan for German outfit RB Leipzig in search of regular first-team football. Injuries and a loss in form saw him make just seven appearances all season.

This however included a flawless performance in defence against Tottenham Hotspur in the Champions League. Stepping in for the absent Dayot Upamecano, he dominated the Spurs attack with ease and gave a good showing of his potential.

The Welshman can play at centre-back and also as a defensive midfielder. Given the number of options at manager Frank Lampard’s disposal, his chances of gaining regular game time at Stamford Bridge are remote.

But this would not be the case at Bramall lane. Chris Wilder’s side enjoyed a memorable season back in the top-flight and finished ninth last season.

Ampadu is a regular for the Wales national team

The Blades did a good job of developing Manchester United loanee Dean Henderson. Hopefully, they can do the same for Ampadu. A promising player, regular game time could boost his development.

Wales manager Ryan Giggs had recently hinted at his displeasure of Ampadu not getting enough minutes on the pitch at Chelsea. With the Euros coming up next summer, a chance to play regularly will certainly boost the youngster’s chances of making the Wales squad.

If all goes well, Chelsea could be welcoming back a Premier League proven midfielder next summer.

Kenedy has also left Chelsea on loan

Ampadu is not the only Chelsea player who has left on loan this week. Brazilian winger Kenedy too departed the club on a season loan loan to Granada.
