According to The Sun, Chelsea are ready to send under-fire goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga on loan.
Senegalese star Edouard Mendy became the club’s latest signing of what has been a productive summer. Given the need of a keeper since last season, the addition has been a long time coming.
Kepa was dropped towards the end of last season. While he returned to the starting lineup this campaign, his performances have once again been called into question.
Kepa should have done better to prevent Brighton scoring in our opening fixture and did little to cover himself in glory against Liverpool.
According to the report, while no decision has been taken regarding his future, Lampard is ready to give the go-ahead to send Kepa on loan.
The 25-year-old has struggled to live up to the world-record £71m fee Chelsea paid to sign him from Athletic Bilbao back in 2018.
Former Chelsea keeper Petr Cech played a key role in identifying Mendy as a prospective target. (h/t Independent)
Now that he is at the club, it remains to be seen if Mendy will be thrust immediately into the starting lineup. Chelsea face West Bromwich Albion at the Hawthorns this weekend.
The Senegalese custodian arrives at Stamford Bridge to compete with Kepa for the starting spot. Competition is an essential part of evolution and we can only hope that it will bring out the best in Kepa.
Whether the Spaniard will stay put or go out on loan remains to be seen.
