According to The Sun, Chelsea believe they can land West Ham United star Declan Rice for about £40m this summer.
The Blues have enjoyed an excellent summer that has seen them strengthen considerably. Frank Lampard believes signing Rice will help him finish the project he is building at the club.
Despite the Hammers staying firm on their decision to keep Rice, Chelsea are set to test their resolve with a bid in excess of £40million before the window shuts.
West Ham have had difficulties signing players due to a lack of funds. The sale of Grady Diangana to West Brom in an £18m deal has left both fans and David Moyes upset.
If Chelsea’s assumptions are right, the Baggies could yet to lose their biggest asset.
Lampard intends to deploy the youngster in front of the back four. The position is currently held by Jorginho.
While the Italian international is a decent player, his lack of pace has been a real issue. Rice would undoubtedly be an upgrade on the veteran star.
The 21-year-old is close friends with Chelsea star Mason Mount. The duo came through the Blues academy before Rice was released at the age of 14.
To his credit, he went on to make the most of his chance at West Ham and is now in line for a triumphant return to the Bridge.
Despite our additions, Chelsea have struggled to keep a clean sheet in the Premier League. The draw against West Brom showed that while we have the tools, it will be a while before they can perform at their best.
Whther Rice will join the club or not remains to be seen.
