According to The Guardian, Chelsea have almost completed their sixth major signing of the summer, with Kai Havertz on the verge of joining the club.
The 21-year-old German international has been at the top of Chelsea’s summer shopping list. And negotiations with Bayer Leverkusen had been going on for quite some time now, with a breakthrough finally being reached. (h/t The Guardian)
An initial offer of €65m (£58.6m) plus €15m in add-ons had been rejected by the German giants last month. However, they have now accepted an offer worth £72m (€80m) up front plus another €10m. (h/t The Guardian)
In addition, Leverkusen will be due another €10m if a number of complicated clauses are met. It is claimed that Havertz has agreed personal terms on a five-year contract with the club. (h/t The Guardian)
Leverkusen manager, Peter Bosz, confirmed on Monday that Havertz will no longer be training with the squad due to his impending transfer. (h/t The Guardian)
“I don’t expect Kevin Volland and Kai Havertz to train with us again.”
Furthermore, Leverkusen have already narrowed in on a replacement, with AS Roma’s Patrik Schick close to a move to the Bay Arena, which should open the doors for Havertz to complete his transfer to Stamford Bridge. (h/t Daily Mail)
Once the deal is over the line, Chelsea’s overall spending for the summer will exceed £200m.
The prospect of Havertz playing alongside Timo Werner, Christian Pulisic and Hakim Ziyech is certainly an exciting prospect. With the league just a couple of weeks away, we won’t have to wait long to see them in action.
