Fiorentina interested in signing Davide Zappacosta on loan

According to journalist Gianluca Di Marzio, Chelsea defender Davide Zappacosta has emerged as a loan target for Serie A side Fiorentina ahead of the 2020/21 season.

The 28-year-old Italian signed for the Blues in the summer of 2017 from Torino in a deal worth £23m. However, the full-back was never able to establish himself as a regular in the first-team at the Bridge.

Davide Zappacosta joined Chelsea in 2017

Having been sparingly used in the 2018/19 term, Zappacosta was loaned out to AS Roma last summer. However, the 28-year-old failed to make the most of his time at the Italian capital club, making just nine appearances in the 2019/20 season.

Back at Chelsea after the loan spell, Zappacosta is very much unlikely to be a part of Frank Lampard’s plans. The club has Cesar Azpilicueta as the first-choice right-back currently, with Reece James proving to be a fine backup in his breakthrough campaign at Stamford Bridge.

So, Zappacosta could once again be on his way out of the club. And Fiorentina are now reportedly lining up to take him on loan for the upcoming season. (h/t Gianluca Di Marzio)

Zappacosta, during his time at Chelsea, has made 52 appearances, scoring two goals and assisting four more. And it does seem unlikely that he will play another game for the Blues again.

Zappacosta still has two years left on his contract with Chelsea. Considering that, selling him on a permanent basis would be a better move for us, as we would be able to get a sizeable transfer fee, which could be invested in signing Lampard’s targets.

However, no real suitors emerging till now, apart from Fiorentina, it remains to be seen what the club decide to do.
