Chelsea consider signing Brazilian defender Thiago Silva

According to The Telegraph, Chelsea have been offered PSG defender Thiago Silva ahead of their Champions League final against Bayern Munich.

The 35-year-old is set to leave Paris Saint-Germain after the showpiece event against the German powerhouses. This will bring an end to his eight years of distinguished service to the French champions.

The Brazilian has attracted attention from the Serie A with AC Milan and Fiorentina both interested. However, he is keen to fulfill his dream of playing in the Premier League. So much so that he is willing to take a pay cut to make it happen. (h/t The Telegraph)

Thiago Silva has been offered to Chelsea

According to the report, Thiago has been offered to Chelsea. He will now hold talks over a two-year deal.

The Blues are keen to strengthen their defence after a porous season at the back. Frank Lampard has used from the quartet of Antonio Rudiger, Kurt Zouma, Andreas Christensen, and Fikayo Tomori as centre-backs this season.

However, all four have failed to impress, leading the club to look for potential additions this summer. A vastly experienced player, Thiago can be expected to add leadership and acumen to the Blues backline.

Back to the future?

A major concern, however, is his age. At 35, he is nearing the end of his career and also has a lack of pace. Although, he does compensate for it with his excellent reading of the game.

The prospect of him facing off against our major rivals, who all have pacy forwards is not a sobering prospect. In fact Chelsea’s interest in the player has come at least 5-6 years too late.

Thiago is a celebrated player who was, at his heyday, one of the best defenders in the business. He has also attracted attention from Everton now managed by former Chelsea boss Carlo Ancelotti.

It was the Italian who signed Thiago for PSG during his time as manager there.

More Chelsea News

While it is true that Chelsea need defensive reinforcements, we will do well to steer clear of Thiago. Unless he comes in as a fourth choice defender, signing him could prove to be counterproductive.

There are young talented defenders out there who can offer us a longer shelf life while also being better than what we have.
