According to DAZN (h/t Football.london), Bayern Munich CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has poured cold water on any hopes of Chelsea signing David Alaba.
The Blues are keen to bring in a new left-back this summer. The Austrian ace was touted as one of the potential candidates on Chelsea’s radar.
A versatile player, Alaba initially started out at left-back but can do an excellent job at centre-back while showing the same prowess as a defensive midfielder.
There had been some uncertainty regarding his future after he entered the final year of his contract with Die Roten. (h/t The Telegraph)
However, Chelsea’s hopes of securing a cut-price deal have gone up in smoke. According to the report, Rummenigge has revealed that talks regarding a new contract are progressing well.
“With Alaba, I am cautiously optimistic we will find a solution.”
With Bayern optimistic that they can reach an agreement, Alaba looks set to stay on at the home of the Bundesliga champions.
Alaba came up through the Bayern system since joining the club as a teenager in 2008. He initially spent some time in the reserves side before making the step up to the senior squad in 2010.
He has made 383 appearances for Bayern and has scored 31 goals and 48 assists. (h/t Transfermarkt)
Alaba played a key role as Bayern won their eight Bundesliga title on the trot this season. A six-time Austrian player of the year, he has now won 18 major honours with Bayern
Leicester City star Ben Chilwell is Chelsea’s top target at left-back. However, with the Foxes holding firm on their demand of over £80m, Chelsea have begun drawing up contingency plans.
It is fair to say that Alaba can now be chalked off that list.
