Frank Lampard and his Chelsea side faced an uphill task going into the second leg of their Champions League tie against Bayern Munich.
Willy Caballero continued in goal ahead of Kepa Arrizabalaga. Chelsea were also without star winger Christian Pulisic and skipper Cesar Azpilicueta while Pedro also missed out.
The Blues went into the game 3-0 down from the first leg. It got worse in the tenth minute as Robert Lewandowski put the Germans 1-0 up on the night and 4-0 up on aggregate.
The Polish international was the star of the show as he set up Ivan Perisic to make it 2-0. Callum Hudson-Odoi gave the briefest of hopes with a stunning strike only for it to be ruled offside.
Tammy Abraham ensured the Blues went in with hope renewed at the break. Chelsea started off well in the second half but Bayern got stronger as the game went on.
Corentin Tolisso and Lewandowski ensured the night ended in a 4-1 humbling for the Blues. A worrying aspect of the game was the openness at the back.
Bayern sliced through numerous times, underlining the gap that still exists between us and the top European sides. If anything, this match should give Lampard an idea of what needs to be done to make us competitive on the continental stage again.
Although the Blues boss came in for criticism for his lack of substitutions, it is difficult to pinpoint a player who could have made a difference.
The deficiencies in the Blues squad was laid bare for all to see. Having signed Hakim Ziyech and Timo Werner, Chelsea have started the summer transfer window with a bang. If anything, much work is still left to be done.
In all honestly, it was a tame way for us to end our season. But things can only get better. We take a look at how fans reacted on Twitter to the loss.
