According to German publication Kicker (h/t Express), Matthias Ginter is keen to stay on at Borussia Monchengladbach despite interest from Chelsea.
The 26-year-old defender is coming off an excellent season for Die Fohlen. He played a starring role as Gladbach finished in the Bundesliga top four and qualified for next season’s UEFA Champions League.
The German international is under contract at Borussia Park until 2021. The Germans, however, have the option of a further 12-month extension.
If the player is to be believed, he has already made his mind up. He revealed in no uncertain terms that he is keen to stay on at the club.
“I will definitely stay in Gladbach.”
Ginter is excited by the potential at Gladbach and is keen to be a part of the team’s progress. He appears to be happy at the club, ending any chance of him moving on.
Chelsea’s defensive struggles are well known. No top-10 Premier League club has conceded more league goals than us this season. The FA Cup final against Arenal showcased once again the need for us to strengthen at the back.
It remains to be seen who the Blues actually bring in this summer. Not strengthening ourselves in a market where our rivals are financially constrained is an opportunity lost.
The Bundesliga has been the go-to league for Chelsea this season for reinforcements. Having already brought in Timo Werner, the Blues have also made a bid for Kai Havertz.
But one player who will not be coming to Stamford Bridge is Ginter.
