“I want to keep playing” – Chelsea veteran star in no mood to relinquish first-team spot

Willy Caballero has no plans to surrender his starting spot at Chelsea

According to the Evening Standard, Chelsea keeper Willy Caballero intends to continue as the club’s preferred goalkeeper for next season.

The 38-year-old recently signed a one-year extension that will keep him at the club for another year. Having started the season as Kepa Arrizabalaga’s backup, Cabellero has now transformed into Frank Lampard’s preferred choice in goal.

This was laid bare as the Argentine got the nod for Chelsea’s last three games, including the FA Cup Final. Kepa’s time at Chelsea looks to be up, with Frank Lampard keen to bring in a new goalkeeper.

Willy Caballero keen to make the most of his opportunity at Chelsea

Caballero was again in action last night at the Allianz Arena. He endured a difficult night which started badly when he brought down Robert Lewandowski for a penalty.

“I will keep working hard to have this opportunity again.”

Cabellero however has vowed to keep giving his best as he intends to make the most of his opportunities.

“I want to keep playing. In the last month, I became the first goalkeeper and we will see what happens in the future.”

To his credit tough, he stopped himself from explicitly stating that he would replace Kepa as the club’s number one. Caballero also expressed his joy at playing for Chelsea and is glad to have penned an extension.

“I signed a new one-year contract and I am really happy to play with this shirt.”

It clearly looks as if Kepa’s time at the Bridge is up. Nothing sends that message across as much as benching the world’s most expensive keeper in the club’s biggest games.

Such an action shows a lack of faith in the Spaniard’s abilities. Given his recent performances, it is difficult to argue otherwise.

Chelsea look set to have a new man in goal next season. Whether that is Caballero or a new recruit remains to be seen.
