Transfer News: Chelsea in a three-way tussle for Man United veteran star

Chelsea are interested in Manchester United star Sergio Romero

According to ESPN, Chelsea are among a trio of clubs keeping tabs on Manchester United star Sergio Romero.

The Argentine veteran is the understudy to United ace David de Gea. He played for the club in the earlier stages of the FA Cup and the Europa League. However, he was dropped in favour of the Spaniard in the later stages as United bowed out of both competitions.

With the impressive Dean Henderson now back at United, Romero could find himself lower down in the pecking order.

That would seem unfair on a player who has consistently performed when called upon. In fact, his numbers are up there with the best in world football.

Romero made 17 appearances for United last season and kept an impressive 12 clean sheets. On a broader scale, he has 39 clean sheets in 61 games for United and has conceded just 27 goals. (h/t Transfermarkt)

Given these numbers, it is no surprise that he is attracting attention from elsewhere. The 33-year-old could be on the move, with the likes of Leeds United and Everton also interested.

A major priority

A new goalkeeper is at the top of Frank Lampard’s agenda this season. Kepa Arrizabalaga has made a number of high-profile errors all season.

The Spaniard was eventually dropped, with reserve custodian Willy Caballero taking the reins for the final few fixtures. The fact that the Argentine started games against Manchester United, Arsenal and Wolverhampton Wanderers shows the lack of faith Lampard has in Kepa.

While Romero will not be a long-term solution, he does offer a dependable option for at least a couple of seasons. This will also give us time to cash in on Kepa, while searching for a younger goalkeeper.

Romero’s performances have largely gone under the radar at United. He remains one of the most underrated keepers and can do a job at Chelsea.

The 33-year-old has won 96 caps for Argentina since making his international debut in 2009.
