According to the Metro, former Manchester United defender Phil Neville believes Chelsea are lacking in the midfield.
Frank Lampard has done a brilliant job with a side that had lost its best player last summer. The Blues are set to finish in the top four and also have a shot at winning the FA Cup.
Despite the promise shown, Neville believes that the club need someone to stand in for Eden Hazard. He laments the lack of creativity in midfield and has urged Christian Pulisic to play centrally.
“I think it’s the one area where you say can they get Christian Pulisic more central? That’s the one I’d be thinking about.”
Neville believes that neither Mason Mount nor Mateo Kovacic is capable of contributing offensively, at least to the required level.
It looks like Neville is too transfixed in trying to bring in a like-to-like replacement for Hazard that he is not opening his eye to the alternatives.
Pulisic’s blistering pace makes him a force to reckon with and the Blues will do well to keep him out wide, where he can hit teams on the counters.
Mount is still young but has shown excellent promise. Talent takes a while to bloom and the youngster clearly has the potential to become an important player.
While it would be nice to have a Hazard-type player, it is not something we cannot do without. Ironically, Premier League champions Liverpool too have a lack of creativity in midfield.
The reds sacrifice creativity for workmanship. It helps lend a better balance to the team as a whole.
The Blues have signed the likes of Hakim Ziyech and Timo Werner. The attacking duo will add a lot to our attack.
While Neville’s argument can hold true for certain teams, it is clearly not the only way a team can progress and implement a winning formula.
