Frank Lampard rejects he is a ‘gung ho’ manager

According to the Independent, Chelsea manager Frank Lampard is defiant that he has the solution to his team’s defensive fragility.

The Blues have had to make do with an impressive attack but a porous defence. It is an indictment of the fact that no other Premier League team in the top 10 has conceded more than us this season.

Lampard has rejected the title of being a gung ho manager and has added that the era of John Terry and Ricardo Carvalho is a thing of the past.

“In terms of defensively, there is a way that I want us to play and it’s not gung-ho, it’s not crazy.”

Frank Lampard claims to know the solution to his team’s defensive frailties

Lampard believes in the system he is trying to incorporate but believes certain changes need to be made. Chelsea’s susceptibility to set-pieces has been a recurrent theme as we continue to ship in goals.

“A lot of the goals are the balls that come into our box that maybe we don’t defend right at that moment and that’s something that has to improve and I feel I know the answers to it.”

Having played in Chelsea teams that have been solid at the back, Lampard will have had first-hand experience of the importance of a strong defence.

He went on to add that he hates conceding goals and will continue to work on it. According to Lampard, there aren’t many solid centre-back partnerships in world football today.

No other team in the top 10 has conceded more than us

Given that United paid top dollar for an error-prone Harry Maguire, the jury is out on quality defensive reinforcement.

The Chelsea boss is keen to foster healthy competition in his squad and believes he must have four centre-backs at his disposal to last a tough and demanding season.

It is good to know that Lampard is aware of his team’s deficiencies rather than try to mask it or sidestep it. Self-awareness is the first step towards evolution and the Chelsea manager appears to be on the right track.
