Speaking on ESPN FC (h/t Express), Former Chelsea star Craig Burley has urged Frank Lampard to reinforce his defence ahead of next season.
The Blues have already added Hakim Ziyech and Timo Werner. This has done little to mask our existing deficiencies in defence.
Chelsea have conceded 49 goals in 36 Premier League matches. No other team in the top ten has conceded more, a damning indictment of our backline. (h/t Express)
According to Burley, Chelsea should focus on bringing in a new left-back and a centre-back.
“I think we can see the centre-half position and certainly the left-back position needs addressing.”
He also expressed concerns regarding Kepa Arrizabalaga in goal. The Spaniard has failed to repay the faith put in him and has struggled to convey a sense of security at the back.
Kepa also came in for criticism from former Chelsea striker Chris Sutton. Although he believes the club has shown progress in a number of areas, defence isn’t one of them.
“I think the goalkeeper is a massive issue and defensively they’ve conceded two many goals.”
Even if we do bring in defensive stalwarts, it will do little to help us this season. Chelsea still have much to play for and Lampard must do what he can with the resources at his disposal.
We cannot afford to ignore the rearguard and will need a stronger one to compete on multiple fronts next season. There are only so many times you can expect your frontline to outscore the opposition.
The Blues return to action this weekend against Manchester United at Wembley. Lampard will be keen to avoid losing to the Red Devils for the fourth time this season.
