According to the Daily Star, former Chelsea star Michael Ballack has backed Timo Werner’s decision to join Chelsea over Liverpool.
The German striker was one of Europe’s in-demand players. He looked to have his heart set on a move to Anfield until the Blues convinced him otherwise.
He has now found a supporter in Ballack, who believes Werner has made the right decision.
“If Liverpool was really an option for him, he made the best decision for him, and only he can make that decision.”
Ballack believes Timo Werner would have struggled to gain regular game time given the front three at Liverpool’s disposal.
Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah are all world-class players in their prime. Despite Werner’s brilliance, he could have found it difficult to displace the established trio.
He has a better chance of starting week in week out at Chelsea. The Blues are in the midst of something special as Frank Lampard attempts to build a title-winning team.
With a young promising team being blooded, Werner has the opportunity to become the ace of a potentially special squad.
Ballack added:
“To be the main striker, at a huge club like Chelsea, is the best place for him.”
Unlike at Liverpool, he will be the ace at Stamford Bridge. The trust and the confidence that comes with the title can propel him to greater heights.
Ballack, however, believes it is a time-taking process. Werner could be our trump-card as we aim to close the gap on Liverpool and Manchester City.
“It will take time, and Timo is just part of that journey.”
