They reached the latter stages of the Champions League and, at about that time, the title race was taking shape. Manchester City and Liverpool ended up leaving Chelsea behind as they were already out of the other competitions. If Chelsea assign a certain tournament that they want to be successful in then it could help them because they won’t be faced with other distractions. This would more likely be the Champions League or the Premier League.
The Champions League has always been a trophy that Roman Abramovich said he wanted during his time at Chelsea and they finally did it with Roberto Di Matteo in 2012. After the success and obvious full focus of that trophy (shown by a relatively low league position) Di Matteo was sacked months later. Nothing unusual for a Chelsea manager, but this was extremely strange due to the fact he finally won the trophy that everyone at Chelsea craved and it looked as though he might have some immunity from being sacked.
Focussing on one trophy could be a bit of a risk because if they did not win it then that would more than likely result in the sack and would also mean two years without a trophy for Chelsea. They should have a big enough squad to focus on all of the competitions that they are entered into, but they should have a particular one that they want to win in my opinion.
