Chelsea’s Player of the Season: Number 2.

Juan Mata – 7.24

There is no doubt who our player of the season was last season. Juan Mata collected 6 goals and 13 assists from his Premier League season, as from then on, he has gone from strength to strength.

It was maybe harsh he didnt collect the award again statistically this season, but when you see the man that got it, you can understand why.

While he played just one more game this season in the league, he collected 12 goals and 12 assists, from playing in both the AMC and AMR roles; both which he did superbly.

Nobody managed more assists, and only Lampard managed 3 more Premier League goals this season, as he proved he was fluent at both scoring and assisting teammates, completing 2.7 key passes per match. Nobody else managed more than two.

He is no doubt the main catalyst in most of our forward play, highlighted by that fact that he was involved in  nearly 1 in 3 of our goals this season.

Surprisingly, 9 of his 12 goals came away from home. He ran away with the best way average rating by a mile, so he will no doubt want to improve his goal record at the Bridge, although his assists were split equally.

He also managed 3 MOM performances in the league, not surprisingly all away from home, including scooping them in the the two away derby wins against Arsenal and Spurs.

There is certainly no doubt he turns up on the big occasions, and that game against Spurs was his performance of the season, scoring twice and setting up a goal in a 4-2 victory over our former boss and his team, after falling 2-1 behind.

Those two goals as well as 3 of the teams 5 key passes in the game were the main reason behind his stellar performance, although it would be harsh not to mention his defensive effort, as he completed the 3rd most tackles in the team, only the two defensive mid’s beating him.

With all the commotion surrounding other Premier League stars, Mata has not got the plaudits he deserves over the last two seasons, but if he carries on performing to the level he has been, im not sure Blues fans will care.

Juan Mata’s performance away at Tottenham deserved 9mins of YouTube highlights, so here they are.

Would you have put Mata at Number 2? If not, where should he have been placed?
