Chelsea suffer a blow as La Liga giants offer £8.9m per year to world-class free agent

Jan Aage Fjortoft backs Chelsea target David Alaba to move to Spain

According to Norwegian reporter Jan Aage Fjortoft, Chelsea target David Alaba appears to have no intention of moving to the Premier League.

The Austrian superstar has just months left on his Bayern Munich contract. With talks regarding a new deal stalling, he is set to leave on a Bosman in the summer.

The standoff between Alaba and Bayern have seen a number of clubs keep a keen eye on proceedings. It would appear that the 28-year-old’s next destination will be Spain.

With the Premier League all but ruled out, Barcelona and Real Madrid appear to be the likely destinations for the versatile star.

Of the two, the latter appears to be the one making concrete steps to land Alaba. With Sergio Ramos’ future far from certain, Alaba would be an excellent replacement for the long-serving Spaniard. (h/t Mirror)

Real have tabled a contract worth £8.9million a year for the Austrian international.

A missed opportunity!

Not landing Alaba can be considered as an opportunity lost for Chelsea. The Austrian is one of the very few high-profile players in recent memory to be potentially available on a free in their prime.

A versatile player who can play in a variety of positions, Alaba is also a skilled handler of the dead-ball. He would add dynamism to a Blues backline that has benefitted immensely from summer additions.

The player is represented by Israeli superagent Pini Zahavi. Despite his good relations with Chelsea, the club appear to have come out on the losing side this time around.

Neither Real nor Barcelona are the forces of old. Both teams are in need of a rebuild and have struggled to reach their usual levels this season.

Given their current predicament, the capture of Alaba will count as nothing short of a coup. Chelsea meanwhile have a young talented bunch of players who could form the bedrock of a successful side for years to come.

Theoretically, Alaba can achieve more if he joins Chelsea. Whether there will be a late twist in the tale remains to be seen.
